Boyce council president is a "man letting God do it"

The following is a Voice of Boyce interview with next year’s Boyce College student council president-elect, Jim Winn.

VoB: Could you tell us a bit about your family and where you’re from?

Winn: I was born and raised in Maryland, just outside of Washington, D.C. Recently, everyone quickly reminds me of the horrific sniper incident. I actually have a couple friends who worked in the bagel shop that the sniper visited.

My father worked at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in D.C. for 20 years as a pharmacy technician and actually has filled prescriptions for Arnold Schwartzenegger and Ronald Reagan. My mother, Carol, was a teacher and is now a real estate agent. I have one brother, Jonathan, age 25, who is currently preparing to move with his wife to China to teach.

VoB: How did you find yourself at Boyce College?

Winn: I was saved when I was 7-years-old, and after that had always felt a tug towards the ministry. After being saved, I remember a time when I was alone in a room and heard the song “People Need the Lord” by Steve Green and burst into tears because of my growing desire to see the lost saved. The Lord broke me after high school, and I surrendered totally to ministry. Huge spiritual growth followed.

I considered attending Clear Creek Bible College, but eventually became familiar with Boyce through the extension center opening in Tennessee about 15 minutes from my home. Through God’s direction, I attended the extension center for three years until the fall of 2002 and moved on campus to eventually graduate.

VoB: What aspect of the ministry do you feel yourself called to?

Winn: Missions and teaching.

VoB: What is your favorite movie?

Winn: Braveheart. It’s a movie that blends several great movie dimensions into one: history, action, passion, determination and leadership.

VoB: Which character from a book or movie do you most identify with?

Winn: Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. He appeals to my desire to adventure and discover new things.

VoB: Favorite book?

Winn: Safely Home by Randy Alcorn

VoB: Describe yourself in five words.

Winn: Man letting God do it.

VoB: What foreign countries have you visited?

Winn: Venezuela, South America for mission work. Western Canada and Niagara Falls for vacation. And Europe as a child on family vacation.

VoB: If you could change one thing about the American church, what would it be?

Winn: So many churches in the west are centered on business management and man-centered programs and qualifications, rather than the centrality of the cross and an emphasis on the glory of God in all things.

VoB: What one characteristic would you like to see typify Boyce College?

Winn: Christ exalting worship in all things, ranging from studies to relationships to corporate and individual surrender.

VoB: What church do you attend and how would you describe it?

Winn: My home church is Carlisle Avenue Baptist Church, and I would say it has an amazing combination of needs ministry, healthy fellowship and family-like environment with a true shepherd as a pastor.

VoB: If you could spend one day with any one living person, who would it be?

Winn: John Piper

VoB: Do you have a life verse?

Winn: I Corinthians 15:10, “By the grace of God, I am what I am.”
