SBTS plays host to regional ETS meeting

More than 150 members of the Evangelical Theological Society (ETS) gathered at the organization's Southeast Regional meeting held March 18-19 at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Meeting organizer Bruce A. Ware, professor of Christian theology and associate dean of the School of Theology at Southern Seminary, said the meeting attracted a large number of participants for an ETS regional meeting. The ETS general meeting, held each fall, typically attracts several hundred scholars and students.

"Anything over 100 for a regional ETS meeting is well-attended," Ware said. " We were right at 150, and I am very pleased that so many could come and participate. We also had what must be a record number of papers for a regional ETS meeting."

Sixty-four participants—including numerous professors and students from Southern Seminary—presented scholarly papers on various topics ranging from theology and philosophy to Old and New Testament and church history. Sinclair Ferguson, professor of Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary, served as speaker for the plenary sessions. He addressed the topic of the person and work of Christ.

"These regional meetings often give students and young scholars an opportunity to read a paper, and often the quality of papers is very high since much work goes into them," Ware said.

Russell D. Moore, dean of the School of Theology at Southern Seminary, said he was well pleased with the overall response to the regional meeting.

"The ETS meeting was a great success and contribution to the work of the Kingdom of Christ, thanks to the visionary leadership of Bruce Ware," Moore said.

"Professor Ware's leadership in American evangelicalism is one of God's magnificent gifts to the contemporary church, and we at Southern Seminary are honored and blessed to work with him for the upbuilding of the church."
