What influenced your decision to come to Southern Seminary: The prospect of influencing this generation of preachers and teachers

Something surprising students might not know about you: I hitchhiked all over the United States during my late teens and early 20s. Sometimes I would be gone for weeks at a time. I was a Christian at the time, and I witnessed to nearly everyone who picked me up.

Most embarrassing moment: After having been disallowed for years, the dunk was reinstated into amateur athletics when I was in high school. Everyone was eagerly anticipating the first dunk, and my opportunity to dunk occurred in the midst of a very close game. In my excitement I botched the dunk, careening the ball off the back of the rim. The gym erupted in raucous jeering, and I just wanted to crawl off and hide somewhere.

Most influential persons in your life: My parents, Jim B. and Irene Orrick. Through their sincere and consistent Christian lives they have shaped me morally and spiritually. They are both avid readers of good books, and under their influence I began reading widely when I was very young. My dad has been preaching for more than 50 years, and he has been pastor of the same Baptist Church since 1963. He is an excellent preacher, and I learned from his example that good preaching takes a lot of work. After we children left home, my mother earned her M.A. in English and taught college English for several years, but long before that she helped me want to write and speak well.
